RAM Is Basically Gold Now

If you’ve tried to buy anything from an SSD to a new laptop, you've probably had a heart attack looking at the price. RAM that used to cost like $50 is now $150+. This isn't inflation or a random price hike. It's an actual global memory chip crisis. DRAM (the RAM in your laptop) and NAND (the memory in SSDs) are both made by basically three companies: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. These three control like 90% of the world's DRAM supply. And right now, all three of them are choosing to sell most of their chips to AI companies instead of to normal consumer tech brands, because AI data centres pay more. Think about it from their side. Nvidia reportedly locked in a massive memory deal with SK Hynix. SK Hynix has said its entire 2026 production is already sold out to AI infrastructure, not to your next gaming PC. When Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are placing orders for AI chips like they have unlimited money, why would a memory company bother making cheaper RAM for consumers?

The numbers are honestly insane. DRAM contract prices jumped something like 90-95% in a single quarter this year. Some individual chip prices have literally quadrupled since last year. Laptops and prebuilt PCs are getting more expensive. Manufacturers covered the cost for a while, but now they're passing it onto us. GPUs, which are incredible pieces of hardware because of the work and billions of dollars that go behind developing the chips(the smart inside of the GPU), now cost a lot more, and you are paying more for the VRAM than the chip inside the GPU. Building your own PC used to be the cheaper option. Right now it's not, because RAM and SSDs are such a big chunk of the build cost. Consoles and phones aren't safe either. Companies are already warning they might raise prices, and some are already raising them, like Sony with their PS5, which started at $500 at the time of release(2020) and now costs $650.

And the worst part? Many people are saying this isn't temporary. Samsung and SK Hynix have said the shortage could last into 2027 and beyond. This isn't a small supply chain hiccup that fixes itself in a year. It's a structural shift. The memory industry restructured itself around AI, and consumer tech is now just whatever's left over.

And now this memory crisis is basically pouring gas on that fire. Because it's not some small argument anymore about whether AI is good or bad for society; it's literally making your stuff more expensive. People are sitting there trying to buy a $200 SSD that now costs $500, and the reason is some tech company needed the memory chips more to train a chatbot. That's your wallet getting hit directly.

We're living in a world where AI isn't just impacting software; it's eating the hardware supply chain. DRAM and NAND contract prices are already climbing into Q2,. If you're building a PC or you're a student planning an upgrade in the next few months, don't hold out hoping for the next price drop. SSD and RAM prices look like they're headed up this year, not down. If your current rig still does the job, you can probably wait another cycle. But if you were already planning to upgrade, now's the time to do it.
